What is listening? I feel like I do it a lot---in classes and lectures, during sermons at church, with music, and with my friends. But especially the last few days something that has been on my mind is this concept of listening. I'm thinking that it is one thing to be silent while someone else is talking. It is completely different thing to be an active listener, actually considering what is being said and giving a wholehearted response.
I'm sure many of my friends would admit that my ability to type quickly gives them plenty of chances to listen whenever I'm in an online chat or texting situation. :-) And I do enjoy talking. Today I wanted to share my gratefulness for the people in my life that truly listen to me, no matter how long I ramble or how little sense I make. And I'm also challenging myself at the same time to be an active listener. There are always stories from little siblings to hear, and I know that if I give other people a chance to share things, they will. I want to listen more, there are so many things to learn, not to mention the fact that talking can very quickly get you in sticky and unwanted situations.
I have been incredibly blessed by a few particular people that always, and I mean, always, actively listen to all that I have to say! My Mom and Dad of course get to relive every funny incident, disappointment, and schoolwork question that I have to share. I'm not sure how they do it actually. Hehe. Others include my Grandparents and my Aunt Alicia, who never speaks without careful consideration of the impact of her words, but is full of such wisdom. I really appreciate the open ears of these people. Also, in the last weeks especially, a few special friends have in some cases proved their loyalty, in others they have helped me to move past things or see issues in a new light, but each situation has been accompanied by active listening. And I am so thankful for each one. For me, it is something that heals, energizes and blesses me. Your listening ears also inspire me to take what I see in you and apply it to my own unique circumstances.
Much love,
Kaitlyn
